We are delighted that all three shops re-opened in the first week of July after the recent lockdown. Our Abingdon shop is looking particularly spectacular after a total refurbishment following the fire in 2017. We have put COVID-specific safety measures in place in all three of our shops, both on the shop floor and also in our handling of donations, to ensure our staff, volunteers and customers stay safe. If you are in the area, please come to our shops and grab some amazing bargains!
We are looking for an Assistant Shop Manager to work two days per week in our busy and popular shop in Faringdon, with opportunities available for additional hours to cover annual leave. The hours will usually be Mondays and Sundays with some flexibility. Full training will be provided.
If you have drive, enthusiasm and determination to make a difference to the lives of others, enjoy helping and meeting people and have previous retail experience (preferably within charity retail) then please submit your CV and covering letter via email to Karen Froud (firstname.lastname@example.org) saying why you would like to work for ACACIA UK.
The UK team were so happy recently to welcome Daina Kibera to the UK for the first time. Daina oversees our projects in Kenya, working alongside the children and families that we support through the funding we deliver. We were delighted to take Daina around our shops and show her where some of that funding comes from!
Pictured here in our Faringdon shop (from the left) is shop manager Fiona, Janet (CEO) and Daina.
ACACIA UK is now working in partnership with another Oxfordshire-based charity called Rafiki Thabo Foundation. Since our foundation as Action for People in Conflict in 1995, we have gone through many changes, not least in our name. Over the years, we have worked in many countries with hundreds of vulnerable children. Thousands of people have supported us as volunteers, donors or customers. Millions of pounds have been raised. Throughout, every new direction has been driven by one aim: to raise as much money as possible and to use that money most effectively to help children in desperately poor circumstances in Sub Saharan Africa.
In 2017, the ACACIA trustees decided to seek another like-minded small charity with which to partner in order to combine forces to cut costs and increase the reach of our work overseas. Rafiki Thabo Foundation support various education projects in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda. They provide scholarships to bright children living in poverty and have plans to expand their work to include children with disabilities. By combining ACACIA UK’s income streams from shops and donors and our expertise in disability with Rafiki Thabo’s broader geographical reach and well-established local committees of volunteer workers, we will be able to help more children in need. And by sharing administration and office costs, we will reduce overheads, leaving more money to be spent where it is needed.
We are very excited by this new partnership. Rafiki Thabo is a dynamic and fast-growing organisation and together we will achieve great things. If you would like to find out more about them please visit their website.
